This past week, I participated in a Ritualwell class with Alden Solovy on “Writing From One Word of Torah.” I distilled 3 stream-of-consciousness prompts on the word “Baruch/Berekh,” the root of which can mean “blessing’ and “knee, into this poem.
Blessing my bended knees
I feel them, it’s hard to get up
Perhaps that’s the point.
Blessing is strength,
It takes strength to bend my knees,
As it takes strength to bless others–
Especially when I’m not in the mood.
I bless my knees and my body for working properly
Most of the time
And bless my soul when I need it.
When I bend my knee in blessing
I remember
My body has miles on it
But I’m blessed with the ability to care for it
And with people who know how to fix it.
And perhaps I will be blessed to
Live my entire (please God long) life
With the blessing of my original knees.
