The second season of Ted Lasso, Apple TV’s award-winning TV show, finished last week, and I’m left with so many questions about what’s going to happen next season!
If you haven’t been watching, Ted Lasso (played by Jason Sudeikis) is a mediocre college football coach who gets hired to coach the Richmond Greyhounds, a British football aka soccer team. Unbeknownst to him, he wasn’t hired for his knowledge of soccer–he had none–but to hopefully run the already lackluster team into the ground. At least on the face of things, he remains clueless, but there’s no question of the impact he has on others, and they on him.
In this week’s Torah reading, Lech Lecha, Avram (who is later renamed Araham) is told by God to leave his home, and his father’s house, and set out on a journey to a place that God would show him. Both leave family behind, and neither have any idea of what awaits them. Both, however, will make significant impacts in and on their new worlds.
Something I appreciate about the major figures in the Torah is their humanness; they’re not larger-than-life individuals who can do no wrong. They’re flawed characters who don’t always do the right thing. However, both Ted and Abraham grow and change throughout the process. They learn to navigate their new worlds and become the people they’re meant to be. Lech lecha, go to yourself. Be vulnerable and open to possibility.
We know how Avraham’s story ends, for Ted, we’ll just have to wait for the next season.
